content marketingMany times I have been asked the question, “what is content marketing”?

You have probably heard how important it is to create fresh, original content that you can put out to the masses. But, what does all of that actually mean?

To answer that question, I am going to share a trio of keys that will give you a better understanding of content marketing and how it can be used to grow your business.

Content marketing can be broken down into three elements:

  1. Delivering content that is helpful to your audience.
  2. Focusing on a specific niche.
  3. Building trust among those interested in said niche.

Keep in mind that when you focus on niche marketing that you are targeting the people within that niche as opposed to the subject.

Let’s break each element down a little further:

Helpful content – What exactly do we mean by “content”? Simply put, it is material that helps give people a better understanding of a topic or calls them to action. Essentially, anything that can help them learn.

Some content examples include:

  • A written article
  • A video posted to YouTube
  • A phone conversation with a customer
  • A webinar

Content is anything that teaches, informs, motivates, or lead a customer to take action. The more detailed the content, the more info they will receive and the more it will help.

Simple enough, right?

It’s important to understand that content marketing and article marketing are not the same thing, as content creation is more than just a blog post.

Some other ways that content can be shared include:

  • Audio
  • Podcast
  • Video
  • Teleseminar
  • Books
  • Webinar
  • Reports

These are just a few of the techniques that you can use to add informative, entertaining content to your website, but they are not the only ways. Try to be as creative as possible so that the content you deliver really stands out when trying to answer the question what is content marketing.

You need to ensure that your content is specific to your niche, which begs the question: what is a niche?

A niche is best described as a collection of people with a shared interest.

  • It could be a group of people that suffer from the same illness or phobia.
  • A niche might be comprised of a group of people specifically looking for others with shared interests.
  • People interested in affiliate marketing are a niche.
  • People looking to get the most out of social media are a niche.

The list goes on and on, and it is up to you to find a niche that interests you and which you believe you can share great content in. The toughest part is digging deeper within a category to find a niche that is not already well covered by thousands of other people on the internet.

Picking a niche is not that difficult, but choosing one where people are willing to spend money based on the content you deliver is the hard part.

That changes a little if you are not looking to generate income, but rather just want to share your knowledge of a subject. You will have a wider audience and you won’t have to chase down those with their wallets open.

Stephen Covey famously said in “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” that you need to think of the end result before you begin, which is very much the case with content marketing.

Finally, you need to establish trust within the niche that you build.

This is not something that will happen overnight, but will happen quicker of you are able to consistently deliver quality content.

The best type of content is that which is genuinely helpful to the people in your niche. It should inform and entertain, and also fill a specific need that they wish to have answered. In short, it should make their lives better in some small way.

In short, if you can deliver content directly or point people to sites that are delivering great niche content, they will very quickly begin to trust every bit of content that you give to them. This is a win/win situation, with both you and the people in the niche benefitting from the bond.

If you are looking to generate income online, building trust will very much help make that happen. People that receive your content will be more willing to invest in your recommendations if they trust the content that is being put in front of them.

To recap, content marketing is the act of delivering helpful information to a specific niche with the goal of building trust over a period of time.

We hope that the information provided above has been helpful in getting you to understand how content marketing can help your business grow.

This is an incredibly powerful tool that you should implement into your business strategy, if you haven’t done so already. This is particularly true when it comes to creation, which is something that will be discussed in length in a later article.
