leadersHave you ever wondered why it is that some bosses are great and others are borderline terrible? There is no easy answer to that question, but what you generally find is that the best managers all portray the same qualities and leadership skills. What follows is by no means a complete list of the positive habits portrayed by great leaders, but this 10 are definitely the most common.

  1. Courage – Most people will generally not follow that people that they do not feel have what it takes to lead the way. When people ask others to follow, it is generally because they have the courage to lead the way. That courage only grows stronger as adversity is faced and overcome, which is why leaders who follow the safe path seldom achieve the highest levels of success and respect.
  2. Effective Communication – Having a great plan is only half the battle. A great leader needs to be able to communicate exactly what needs to be done in order for said plan to be properly executed. When the level of communication is great, people become inspired and ready to excel, as they feel their needs are being met by the person they chose to follow.
  3. Generosity – A great leader will want their team to share in the praise and success that they receive for a job well done. They know that offering high praise to their employees means that the people on their team will feel as though their leader genuinely cares about them.
  4. Humility – A great leader is someone who is humble, and who doesn’t feel that they are somehow better than any of the people that they lead. They will be ready to roll up their sleeves and jump in the moment they see that their employees need a little help.
  5. Self-awareness – This is one trait that the vast majority of great leaders possess. They are acutely aware of what they do well, and what their weaknesses are. Leaders are able to effectively put qualified people in the areas where it is clear that they themselves would struggle or slow down the team.
  6. Passion – If a boss shows that he or she is less than happy with their position, it is something that will filter down to the employees. There is a contagiousness that comes with displays of enthusiasm and passion, and employees can’t help but get caught up in it all when a boss shows how passionate they are about what they are doing.
  7. Infectiousness – Passion actually plays something of a role in this particular leadership habit. Having a great idea and showing passion for a project is one thing, but you also need to be able to convey that idea through stories and imagery that will help people see the end result. Once that picture becomes clear to others, they will be willing to travel all the way to the end.
  8. Approachability – People who say that they hate their boss often cite the fact that he or she is usually unwilling to listen to the ideas or criticisms of others. A good leader is well aware that they are not perfect, and as such are willing to adopt an open door policy to their employees, giving them a voice in the process.
  9. Accountability – A great leader will never try to pass off a failure to someone else, and they will most certainly not let someone take else take the heat when it is undeserved.
  10. Sense of Purpose – Creating a clear vision of where you are going is only half the battle. Leaders also need to be ready to explain why that journey is being taken in the first place. Employees will then feel like they are an integral part of the process.
